Every stylist has been asked this question. Every client has overthought it. The answer comes down to four things: your desired length, your install method, whether you're using a closure or frontal, and the look you're going for. Here's exactly how to calculate it.
The honest answer is: it depends. Your hair length, the texture you're working with, and the look you're going for all factor in. But there are clear guidelines that take the guesswork out and that's exactly what we're breaking down here.
The General Rule of Thumb
For most, 2 to 4 extensions is ideal for a full, natural looking install. The longer you go, the more extensions you'll want, not because you need more coverage, but because longer hair is lighter per extension and thinner at the ends. More extensions means more density throughout.
What Style Are You Going For?
Length is only part of the equation. The look you want plays just as big a role in how many extensions you need.
Full, Voluminous Hair
If you want big, layered, statement hair, think bouncy waves, a bold blowout, or serious volume. You'll want to be on the higher end of the count. This is exactly what The Muse is made for. Our Indian hair extensions are naturally full-bodied and voluminous. The wave pattern adds dimension and movement, so even 3 extensions can look like a full, lush install. If you're layering or want a dramatic, head-turning effect, go with 3 to 4 extensions of The Muse.
Natural, Blended Styles
If your goal is a seamless blend, a silk press, stretched natural styles, or anything that needs to melt into your own texture, you likely don't need as much volume. The Loft, our Cambodian hair extensions, is soft, fluid, and incredibly versatile. It lays beautifully and blends with a wide range of natural textures without overpowering them. For blended styles, 2 to 3 extensions of The Loft will give you a polished, effortless finish.
Does Your Install Method Matter?
Yes, The way your extensions are installed affects how full they look and how many you actually need.
A sew-in or weave install typically requires more extensions because your natural hair is braided down underneath. You're covering more surface area from root to tip. A quick weave or glue install can sometimes get away with fewer extensions since the cap method provides a base. And if you're doing a closure or frontal install, factor in that your closure or frontal is covering the top, so your extensions only need to cover from the nape up, which can reduce your count by one.
Adding a Closure or Frontal?
If you're pairing your extensions with a closure or frontal, here's the simple adjustment: subtract one from your total. A 4x4 or 5x5 closure covers the crown, so your extensions are doing less work. For a frontal install, where the piece covers your full hairline, you can often go one extension lighter too, especially for lengths under 22 inches.
